System Requirements

EZNews General Technical Information

EZNews is a true client-server application. EZNews currently requires a Windows-based client (workstation) computer, running any of the current releases of Microsoft Windows (©Windows 8, ©Windows 7, ©Windows Vista, ©Windows XP Professional etc.).

EZNews requires standard TCP/IP networking, and can run on any network that supports the Server Message Block (SMB) protocol, also called the Session Message Block, NetBIOS or LANManager protocol.

EZNews is a client-server application that uses Microsoft Windows© clients and servers running the Windows Server 2008© Operating System (OS). Windows Server 2003© may also be used, but as Microsoft discontinues support for older versions, there is no guarantee future EZNews software releases will remain compatible with the older OS.

The system is designed to operate over any standard TCP/IP network. EZNews can easily coexist with other applications in a standard networking environment.

Client workstations are “thin” client configurations, and can operate under recent versions of the Microsoft Windows© operating system (Windows 2000© and later, including Windows 8©, Windows 7©, Windows Vista©, and Windows XP©). Windows 95©, Windows 98/98SE©, and Windows ME© are not supported.

EZNews is supplied with a fully functional Relational Database Management Server (RDBMS). With EZNews, there is no need for end users to provide an ‘OLE or ODBC compliant database,’ which means EZNews does not carry the hidden costs of other systems.

EZNews Hardware Specifications

File Server

Note: The following requirements are applicable to both physical and virtual servers. We recommend configuring your server to have two hard drives or hard drive partitions: one to hold system files and the like, and one dedicated solely to the EZNews installation. This is recommended, but not mandatory.

The File Server stores all of your data, such as scripts, rundowns, planning, staff information and more.

The File Server is MISSION CRITICAL, and Windows-based File Servers must be reserved for system functionality. The File Server may be configured as a Domain Controller; however, it should not be used as a host for resource-intensive software or services (i.e. Email Server, Web Server, etc.).

The following hardware resources are recommended:

  • Broadband Internet connection to facilitate downloading/uploading binary and data files.
  • The File Server must also include standard components (minimum 14” SVGA adapter/monitor), standard keyboard and mouse. Other optional components may include 3.5”/1.44 MB floppy disk drive, CD-ROM drive. If dual/redundant servers are to be used, additional server hardware meeting these specs is required.
  • We also recommend a server-class chassis with extra cooling and redundant power supply.

The following software resource is recommended:

Hard Drive Defragmenter: DisKeeper© File System utility. Though it is not required, in our experience DisKeeper products greatly improve file system performance, resulting in improved system performance, productivity and reliability.

Wire Server

The Wire Server receives multiple wire feeds. It sorts each wire story, writes it into the EZNews database, and gives all system users access to wire information.

The end user is responsible for obtaining and maintaining subscription(s) to wire service(s). Automated Data Systems (creator of EZNews) is not a content provider. Note: Check with your Wire Service provider to see if they offer data delivery via the Internet. EZWire can optionally be configured to receive data via the web.

The Wire Server must be, at minimum, a ©Windows NT workstation or a workstation running ©Windows 2000 Professional. It does not require a ‘server’-level operating system, though ©Windows NT Server or ©Windows 2000 Server may be used.

Like the File Server, the Wire Server cannot be used as a host for other resource-intensive software or services.

The following hardware resources are recommended:

  • The Wire Server must also include standard components (minimum 14” SVGA adapter/monitor), keyboard and mouse, 3.5”/1.44 MB floppy disk drive, CD-ROM drive.
  • For systems that will receive more than two wire services, a multi-port serial board is required. The selected board must include a Microsoft-certified NT driver. We recommend products from Digi International (http://www.digiboard.com).

Prompter Workstation

The prompter workstation drives the EZNews Prompter. The EZNews Prompter also delivers text to the closed caption encoder. Additionally, it can function as a normal workstation.

Pentium III 1GHz
or better

2 GB RAM

The following hardware resources are recommended:

  • The EZNews Prompter workstation must include a high quality video adapter. We recommend a discrete GPU with a minimum 256MB of video memory. More recent integrated GPUs, like those found in Intel’s Core i3/i5/i7-2xxx (and newer) CPUs, and AMD’s APUs, will suffice, provided they meet the video memory requirement.
  • The EZNews Prompter may require a VGA-to-NTSC video converter, such as the models available from ADS. Other VGA/NTSC converters (Black Box VGA to Video Portable II or VideoLinx Inc. Print-To-Video converter) may be substituted.
  • The EZNews Prompter requires a standard mouse or trackball to control prompter
scrolling. We recommend wheel mouse products from Logitech or Microsoft.
  • The EZNews Prompter workstation requires standard components (minimum 15” SVGA
adapter/monitor), keyboard and mouse. Optional components may include 3.5”/1.44 MB floppy disk drive, standard serial port in installations where EZNews will be connected to a closed caption encoder.

Workstations

Workstations access the File Server and Wire Server through standard Ethernet
networking connections.

  • Optional components may include CD-ROM, Sound card, speakers, etc.

Apple Macintosh© Client Workstations (excluding Prompter)

Though EZNews is not a native Mac application, dozens of installations are using EZNews on Mac computers, connecting to the EZNews server via solutions like Parallels, VMWare, Remote Desktop, etc.

  • Operating System: Apple Mac© OS X 10.5 or later (Intel CPU required)
  • Networking: Standard TCP-IP networking
  • Connectivity: Components (Parallels, VMWAre, Remote Desktop, etc.) for the server configuration selected.

Network, Printers, UPS, and Peripherals

In brief, networking components must meet the following specifications:

  • Network interface cards (NICs): Vendor and model should be listed by Microsoft as compatible with Windows networks. Each networked machine requires one card.
  • Network switches/hubs/routers: Each networked machine (including File Server and Wire Server) requires one port on the switch/hub/router.
  • Category 5 Network: Network cables must meet the 10-Base-T, 100-Base-T, or 1000-Base-T standards. We recommend RJ-45 twisted pair, Category 5 (or better) cables and connectors.
  • EZNews can perform satisfactorily on properly configured wireless networks.

Any relatively current, fast network laser printers with built-in networking or connection to a print server will be adequate. Though multi-function and inkjet machines will work, they are not recommended.

APC© Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS) or equal for server(s), wire server(s), and prompter workstation(s).

Good quality surge suppression for all computers and components.
